The Federer train was full steam in his first match after a 5 day recovery from illness. The number one ranked men's tennis player in the world only needed 74 minutes to dispatch Argentina's Diego Hartfield 6-0 6-3 6-0.
Compare that to the first set of yesterday's Nadal vs Viktor Troicki of Serbia - 64 minutes to complete!
Winners for yesterday included my favourites Richard Gasquet (8) of France who defeated Nick Lindahl of Austria 6-0 6-1 3-6 6-2; Andy Roddick (6) of USA who defeated Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Replubic 6-3 6-4 7-5; Tommy Robredo (11) of Spain who defeated Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-4 6-2 6-7(5) 4-6 7-5; Stanislas Wawrinka (26) of Switzerland who beat Julien Benneteau of France 6-3 6-3 6-3. A big loss yesterday was Andy Murray.
Winners today, aside from Federer, included my favourites Novak Djokovic (3) (who did another Sharapova impersonation on court to the delight of the Aussie crowd) of Serbia who defeated Benjamin Becker of Great Britain 6-0 6-2 7-5; James Blake (12) of USA who defeated Nicolas Massu of China 6-3 6-2 6-2; Marcos Baghdatis (15) of Cyprus who defeated Thomas Johansson of Sweden 6-7(0) 2-6 6-3 3-6; Marat Safin of Russia who defeated Ernests Gulbis of Latvia 6-0 6-4 7-6(5); David Nalbandian (10) of Argentina who defeated Robert Smeets of Austria 6-1 6-1 7-6(4)
In the women's side yesterday saw Justine Henin, Alicia Molik, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic, Lindsay Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo, Nicole Vaidisova, Elena Dementieva, among others to the second round. Funny thing is, there are so many grandslam winners in the women's draw compared to the mens. In the men's its no surprise since the last 3 years we've seen only Federer and Nadal win grandslams. In the women's matches yesterday alone saw 5 different grandslam winners play - Justine (7), Serena (8), Sharapova (3), Lindsay (3), Amelie (2).
