A New Philippine Congress!

The Philippines Congress has just taken a huge turn in its history! Replacing a 5-time serving speaker of the house Jose De Venecia, because unfortunately for him, I think he was used by the Opposition.

It all started because of a deal that was supposedly inked with corruption. This deal was the Broadband deal known as ZTE because it was between the Philippine Government and a Chinese firm named ZTE. This deal was brought to light when Rep. Jose Solis accused De Venecia, Jr.'s son, Jose de Venecia III for questioning a $330 million broadband connection deal between the Philippine Government and Chinese firm ZTE.

Rep. Solis hit De Venecia III for desiring to have his Amsterdam Holdings, Inc. (AHI) get the deal, which he apparently lost the bidding for and now was all sour-grapes about it. Especially since it looked as if several politicians were given their parts of the deal. EEEEK.

In any case, I'm sure the opposition took this as a means to bring down President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. And that is terrible turn-coatism so I guess many in the Congress felt that he burned bridges with his almost 2-hour privileged speech and thus instead of those voting for him voting him to stay, well they thought better, I mean you can't work wit the Executive after having said all that.

I for one feel bad about what happened to de Venecia. But he should just think about his future now as a private citizen who can still help the country like former president Ramos. Now they say that the Congress will elect a Mindanao representative which is good because they say most funding to that great northern territory of the Philippines is couped, as in cut off hahaha. Terrible.

In any case, I hope for the Congress to continue being a productive chamber of legislation unlike the Senate who I personally think should be abolished already ala-De Venecia Parliamentary style.

A little bit more after the jump.

I am a supporter Gloria, and this thing that happened seems to be a good thing. At least now with a Mindanao Speaker of the House, the funds that Pres. Gloria was able to produce using her great skill of making this economy produce money at last, a good part will hopefully go to Mindanao. Just imagine if we could finally bring Mindanao to the level of productivity Luzon has - something like Laguna.

Anyway, I hope De Venecia finds a way to be productive and Gloria and the Congress do their best untill 2010 when the Philippines votes for a new president!
